Willow Don’t You Weep

Willow Don't You Weep

A photo taken in Detroit in a seriously challenged area.

I have been photographing in Detroit since 2004. You can see more of my stuff at my Flickr account. I am in the process of expanding my online options and slowly diminishing my presence at Flickr. I’ll be writing about that in the near future here at WordPress. If you want to see my other stuff, visit me at My FLickr.

Winds of Change

I have been photographing on the streets of Detroit since the very first day of 2004.  My brain was so numb from that first visit (and it was a frigid morning, but that has nothing to do with my numbness) and my first instinct was to stay away because I felt I was an intruder, peering in on people’s misery in the city.  However, when I found that people were both shocked and curious about what was really going on in Detroit, at least in the areas (the worst) where I visited, I decided to make another trip into the city and soon I was overcome with the feeling I was on a mission, a revelation of the wounds suffered daily on the streets of Detroit.

That was some years ago and since then Detroit has been slowly demolishing abandoned homes and buildings, boarding up vacant stores, and even building new homes.  The population has shrunk tremendously and the population remains scattered about the 138 square miles that is Detroit.

I have many more images posted in my Flickr account, hundreds, even thousands.  Over the next few months I am planning on trimming my gallery down to show only my best shots, so if you want a real look at the worst neighborhoods in Detroit, look now.
